Orono’s Webster Mill demolition starts Monday with public barbecue

By Nick McCrea, BDN Staff

ORONO, Maine — The old Webster Mill is coming down on Monday, and the town is throwing a public barbecue to say goodbye and usher in a future for the site — as home to an upscale 24-unit condominium building.

“It’s a turning point for the town,” said Kevin Bunker of Developers Collaborative, the company planning the project.

Town officials, residents, developers and future condominium residents will gather at 5 p.m. Aug. 22 in Webster Park, on the riverfront at the corner of North Main Street and North Main Avenue, to grill hamburgers and hot dogs and listen to live music.

Around 6 p.m., the festivities will move down the street to the demolition site, where onlookers can watch crews knock down the first wall of the building.

The demolition will take five or six weeks to complete, according to Bunker. Land grading and shoreline preservation work will continue through the summer.

Construction on the condominium complex isn’t scheduled to begin until the spring of 2012, but 11 of the 24 units already have been reserved, according to Bunker.

“The site is still going to be very important to the town, but in a new way,” Bunker said
