SEARSPORT, Maine — Maine State Police are reporting that a contractor working on a water utility project was killed late Thursday afternoon after being struck by a dump truck along U.S. Route 1.

The accident took place about 4 p.m. near the intersection with Kidder Point Road, Searsport Police Chief Dick LaHaye said Thursday night. The victim’s name, age and hometown were being withheld pending notification of family members, he said.

LaHaye said the victim was standing near a Searsport Water District construction project when a dump truck driven by an employee of RF Jordan Construction of Ellsworth backed into him, killing him instantly.

The man died as a result of impact from being struck and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident remains under investigation by the Searsport police and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the federal agency that investigates workplace injuries and deaths.

Motorists along that stretch of Route 1 were rerouted around the crash for several hours after the accident, LaHaye said. The road reopened to regular traffic shortly before 8:30 p.m.

Waldo County deputies and the Maine State Police’s commercial vehicle enforcement unit assisted at the scene.
