Brunswick recommended for train layover facility

The Associated Press

BRUNSWICK, Maine — A consultant is recommending a site near a Brunswick neighborhood for a new train layover facility serving the Amtrak Downeaster once the train service is extended north.

The Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority needs the layover facility for repairs to trains that have made the Boston-to-Brunswick run. Currently, the train only goes as far as Portland, but service is expected to be extended to Freeport and Brunswick in late 2012.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the authority’s consultant settled on a site near Bouchard Drive, but residents of the area are worried about pollution, noise and vibration from up to three diesel trains that would park at the facility overnight.
