Grants helping Bucksport police conduct patrols for drunken drivers

BUCKSPORT, Maine — The local Police Department will be stepping up patrols for drunken drivers beginning Friday with the help of state and federal grants.

The grant money will allow the department to keep an additional officer on the streets during key hours. The officer will be conducting traffic enforcement patrols with the goal of catching those who may be driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, Sgt. David Winchester said Wednesday.

Winchester said he hopes the additional manpower on the street — as well as publicity about the patrols — will further discourage impaired drivers from getting behind the wheel.

The grant will pay for additional patrol shifts into September.
