Ryan Gay wins MSGA Match Play Championship

Updated:

AUGUSTA — Pittston’s Ryan Gay used birdies on the sixth and 11th holes and a bogey-saving putt on the 12th hole to beat Portland’s Matt Greenleaf 3-and-2 in the Maine State Golf Association’s Match Play Championship at the Augusta Country Club Thursday.

Gay’s two birdies gave him a 2-up lead and, after driving his tee shot out of bounds on the 12th hole, he was able to carve out a bogey which matched Greenleaf’s score on the hole.

Gay captured the win when Greenleaf bogeyed the 16th hole.

Gay had advanced to the final by eliminating Thomaston’s Ricky Jones, 4-and-3, in the semifinals while Greenleaf had to go to the 19th hole to oust Auburn’s Brian Bilodeau.
