Auburn golfer to defend title in WMSGA Championship


ORONO — Kristin Kannegieser of Martindale Country Club in Auburn will be seeking her third title in the Women’s Maine State Golf Association Championship when the 81st annual three-round tourney gets under way Monday morning at Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono.

Kannegieser will tee it up at 7:30 a.m. along with playing partners Ann Probert of Waterville Country Club and Whitney Hand of Bucksport Golf Club, who finished sixth in last year’s tourney.

Kannegieser recorded a 17-over-par 227 to win last year’s tourney at Bath Country Club. She also won the WMSGA title in 2007 at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro.

All of last year’s top finishers will be challenging Kennegieser for the title. Deb Gardner of Belgrade Country Club, who finished second, will tee off 7:50 a.m. along with fourth-place finisher Jennifer Weiland of Bangor Municipal Golf Course and Norwary Country Club’s Leslie Gunther, who finished fifth.

Third-place finisher Mary Brandes of the Woodlands in Falmouth, will tee off at 7:40 a.m. with six-time champion Pennie Cummings of Wayne.
