Fort Fairfield man killed in ATV crash

EASTON, Maine — A Fort Fairfield man is dead after a single-vehicle ATV crash.

Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Department of Public Safety, said Thursday that the accident that killed Kevin Helstrom took place around 10 p.m. Wednesday.

State police Sgt. Tom Pelletier said Thursday that the 35-year-old was eastbound on Easton Line Road traveling at a high rate of speed and failed to stop at the intersection with Route 1A. He crossed the roadway and struck a large rock pile, causing the Arctic Cat Prowler to go airborne and roll over.

Helstrom was ejected and died at the scene. Helstrom was traveling alone at the time of the crash, which happened near the community’s border with Fort Fairfield.

The crash was discovered after Trooper Rob Flynn spotted the unoccupied ATV in the bushes near Route 1A while he was on patrol. Helstrom’s body was next to the machine.

Helstrom suffered major trauma to the head and chest. He was not wearing a helmet.

The ATV had extensive damage.

The investigation continues. High speed and alcohol were factors in the accident, police said.

The state police were assisted by members of the U.S. Border Patrol and Fort Fairfield Police Department.
