PORTLAND, Maine — The Maine medical examiner’s office says a 41-year-old Portland man who died on a city sidewalk was killed by a gunshot wound to the chest.

The office ruled Allen MacLean’s death a homicide after an autopsy Tuesday.

Portland police are investigating MacLean’s death after he was shot about 4:30 a.m. Monday. Witnesses told police they heard a gunshot and then saw MacLean run from behind an apartment house and across outer Congress Street before collapsing on a sidewalk in front of a gas station, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said they’re trying to identify people who attended a party at the apartment house where the shooting occurred.
