Yellow police tape surrounds the scene of an early morning incident where one man was dead in Portland, Maine, on Monday, Aug. 1, 2011.

PORTLAND, Maine — Police are searching for a suspect in the fatal shooting of a 41-year-old man who died on a sidewalk of a well-traveled city street.

Police say people reported hearing a gunshot around 4:30 a.m. Monday and seeing a man run from behind a building on Massachusetts Avenue and across outer Congress Street before collapsing onto the sidewalk outside a gas station.

The victim, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police closed off busy Congress Street while investigating the scene, snarling morning rush hour traffic.

Acting Police Chief Michael Sauschuck said he’s not speculating on a motive as the investigation moves forward. No arrests have been made. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
