STANDISH, Maine — The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department said a 69-year-old man died after the vehicle he was driving went off a road in Standish and a hit a tree, trapping him inside.

The Sheriff’s Department said John Townsend of Standish was behind the wheel when his car went off the road and down an embankment before hitting the tree about 9:30 p.m. Thursday. Deputies say he may have suffered some sort of medical problem right before the crash that contributed to the accident, but they did not give further details.

Officials say he was the only person in the vehicle.

The investigation into the cause of the crash is continuing.
