PORTLAND, Maine — Former Maine state senator and congressional candidate Ethan Strimling will run for mayor of Portland in November’s election.

Strimling made his announcement Monday on WCSH-TV, where he appears as a political analyst. He said he would issue a formal statement Tuesday.

Strimling served in the state Senate from 2002 to 2008 and ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination for the 1st Congressional District seat in 2008.

Strimling becomes the 19th candidate for the mayoral post.

Portland residents last fall voted in favor of having a popularly elected mayor. The city abolished the elected post nearly 90 years ago. Since then, the ceremonial post has rotated among the nine members of the City Council.
