BANGOR, Maine — Officer Doug Smith, who was patrolling the downtown area on a bicycle, ran into three men openly drinking beer Friday night in Gomez Park and one was arrested after allegedly refusing to put down his beverage.
Smith told Peter Wing, 49, who is listed as a transient, and the two other men that drinking alcohol in public is against the law, Bangor police Sgt. Chip Hodges said on Saturday.
While Smith was talking with the men, Wing “picked up a beer and two times takes a drink,” the sergeant said.
Smith told Wing to stop drinking and then warned him three times that he would be arrested if he continued to break the law.
“He continued” and was arrested for disorderly conduct, Hodges said.
Wing, who also had an outstanding warrant from Skowhegan, was taken to Penobscot County Jail and remained there Saturday afternoon.
The other two men with Wing “put their beers down and were fine,” Hodges said. (Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN)
