PORTLAND, Maine — The Cumberland County sheriff says a Maine jail guard is on administrative leave pending an investigation into allegations he assaulted an inmate.
Sheriff Kevin Joyce on Friday said Nicholas Stein didn’t follow jail procedures after a prisoner jumped from a second-story balcony inside the jail in June.
The sheriff said Stein should have called for medical help, but instead handcuffed the inmate, dragged him 200 feet and punched him in the face. WMTW-TV says the 29-year-old inmate was taken to the hospital.
Investigators say the most of the incident was captured on surveillance video. They say Stein could be fired depending on the outcome of the investigation.
