BUCKSPORT – Edward H. Mercer II, 90, died Wednesday, July 13, 2011, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Sept. 15, 1920, at the family farm in North Orland, son of Belmont L. and Marcia A. (Ginn) Mercer.

He graduated from Bucksport High School and attended Hebron Academy. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, and upon returning from the war, he joined the Kenney family business on lower Main Street, Bucksport. In January 1941 Edward married the love of his life, Margaret Kenney and together they changed the business name to Mercer’s Store. He retired after operating the store for 48 years. Ed was an avid outdoorsman; he loved to hunt and fish, and spend time at the camp on Mopang Lake. He served the town as a Bucksport selectman, was a bondsman, a founding member of Bucksport Investment Club, a proud member of Bucks Mills Rod and Gun Club, and for more than 30 years was an active member of Silver Lake Cemetery Association.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Margaret H. (Kenney) Mercer; two daughters, Wendy Carpenter and her husband, Thomas, of Verona Island, and Nancy Mercer-Dumas and her husband, Robert, of Lamoine; and three grandchildren, Dina B. Goodwill and partner, Jimi Hart, of Minneapolis, Ric Goodwill and his wife, Roseanna, of Evanston, Ill., and their children, Renard, Miranda and Serafina, and Greg Goodwill and his wife, Victoria, of South Portland, and their children, Marley and Riley. He is also survived by two sisters, Thelma Woodhead of Brewer, and Julia Remick and her husband, Ralph, of North Orland; one sister-in-law, Genevieve Mercer of Bucksport; as well as several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one brother, Everett Mercer; and one sister, Adora Leach.

A graveside service will be held at a later date this summer with his nephew Pastor Peter Remick officiating.
