Two seal pups swim 60 miles up Sebasticook River

BENTON, Maine — Biologists in Maine say two harbor seal pups are taking a tour of some of the state’s inland waterways.

One harbor seal, estimated to be about six weeks old, appears “fat and happy” and has been feasting on fish in the Sebasticook River in Benton, about 60 miles from the ocean.

The second pup, estimated to be three to four weeks old, was captured in Benton over the weekend because it wasn’t doing well — a biologist said it basically hadn’t figured out how to eat yet — but is now doing fine.

Department of Marine Resources’ marine mammal coordinator Lynda Doughty told the Morning Sentinel this is the first time she has heard of harbor seals as far upstream as Benton.
