CARMEL, Maine — A woman driving on the Horseback Road in Levant early Sunday told police she saw a turtle on the roadway, swerved to miss it and rolled her car, Maine State Police Trooper Forrest Simpson said.

Ashley Savoy, 21, of Levant was driving a 2009 Honda Accord at around 5:50 a.m. when she said she encountered the turtle near the junction of the Garland Road.

“She swerved and lost control of her car and rolled,” the trooper said, adding later that, “She rolled her car onto the Garland Road sign.”

Savoy got a scrape on her hand and did not require a trip to the hospital, Simpson said. The vehicle was damaged in the rollover and its back window was smashed, he said.

The whereabouts of the turtle?

“He was nowhere to be found,” Simpson said. “He had fled the scene.” (Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN)
