BIG MOOSE TOWNSHIP, Maine — Vandals caused thousands of dollars in damage to the Big Squaw Mountain Resort ski area around Memorial Day, a sheriff’s investigator said Monday.
Televisions that had been stored in an empty swimming pool were smashed, chairs were tossed through plate glass windows and doors were chopped with axes, according to Investigator Guy Dow of the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department.
“There was a tremendous amount of damage,” Dow said Monday.
The resort has had only limited operation in recent years and last season was not open at all.
Owner Jim Confalone of Florida could not be reached Monday for comment.
Dow said the vandals broke about every window in the restaurant, including large plate glass windows, and also smashed the soda machine. In the lodge, they smashed the televisions in the pool, rifled through offices, chopped doors and walls with axes and heaved boots, chairs and parts for the ski lift through the windows of the ski shop.
In some areas, it appeared items had been stacked as if the vandals planned to return to get them, but multiple sets of skis and other equipment were left untouched, according to Dow.
Anyone with information about the break-in is asked to call Dow at 564-3304.
