GUILFORD, Maine —The new owners of the Red Maple Inn and Restaurant in Guilford say they want to give customers the best service they can and be an asset to the community.

Martha Ward, 52, and Paul Zimmerman, 47, are leasing to own the nine-room inn and restaurant, which was built in 1837 as a private residence.

Ward, an accountant, and Zimmerman, a former bartender and construction worker, said recently that owning a restaurant was something they both had wanted to do for several years.

“It’s something I’ve always been interested in; there are no nice places to go in the area,” Zimmerman said.

The pair are offering prime entertainment that includes comedian Rob Steen and Freddie Stone on July 8, and the Kelly Parker Band, which has opened for singers Clint Black, Miranda Lambert and Black Hawk, on July 22.

“We just want to be a little different than everyone else,” Ward said. “We want to provide a service to the community.”

Customer service is of the utmost importance to the business’s eight employees, she said.

While the restaurant is now in operation, Ward said renovations are being done to the second floor bedrooms. The couple live in the third-floor apartment.

The inn, which has two pool tables, a bar, a banquet room, a dining room and a full service kitchen, is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday and from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Thursday through Saturday.  The business entrance is the driveway to the right immediately after the Guilford Fire Station.
