Tuesday’s 3 p.m. Eastern B baseball final at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor will be a rematch from the 2010 title game, when Waterville edged Bucksport 3-1 to win its first regional title since competing in Class A in 2001 en route to the program’s first state championship.
The Purple Panthers (16-2) have lived up to their preseason billing, earning the No. 1 seed in the final Heal point ratings before advancing with a 12-2 quarterfinal win over No. 9 Old Town and a 3-2 semifinal survival of No. 4 Mount Desert Island.
No. 3 Bucksport (12-6) edged No. 6 Camden Hills of Rockport 5-4 in its quarterfinal before outscoring No. 7 Hermon 16-3 in the semifinals.
The likely pitching matchup will match Waterville’s Kyle Bishop against Bucksport’s Evan Eldridge, both of whom are coming off quarterfinal victories. Bishop scattered four hits while striking out six batters and walking three during Waterville’s six-inning victory over Old Town, while Eldridge — who pitched against the Purple Panthers in last year’s EM final — allowed seven hits and three walks while striking out 12 in his complete-game victory over Camden Hills.
Also scheduled Tuesday is the Western Class D title game between No. 1 Greenville (13-2) and No. 2 Rangeley (9-5), set for 7 p.m. at Saint Joseph’s College in Standish. Greenville, which also reached the WM final last year, split two regular-season games against Rangeley in late May, with Greenville a 13-3 winner in the first game and Rangeley an 11-6 victor in the second game.
The Eastern Maine finals continue Wednesday in Class A and Class C. No. 1 Lewiston (17-1) and No. 2 Bangor (15-3) will play for the Class A crown in a 5 p.m. start from Morton Field in Augusta. Top-ranked and undefeated Foxcroft Academy (18-0) will face No. 2 and defending regional champion Calais (14-1-1) at 7 p.m. at Mansfield Stadium.
