Building owner charged with arson in Harpswell fire

HARPSWELL, Maine — A 51-year-old Cundy’s Harbor man was charged Monday with arson resulting from an investigation into a two-alarm fire Friday afternoon on Little Ponds Road in Harpswell.

Morgan Pulsifer, 51, was in Cumberland County Jail on Wednesday morning, charged with the felony after investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s Office say he burned the two-unit building he owns with family members at 61 Little Ponds Road.

More than 30 firefighters went to the blaze Friday afternoon on a private dirt road off Bethel Point Road in the Cundy’s Harbor section of town, Cundy’s Harbor Fire Chief Ben Wallace Jr. said.

The building was fully engulfed in flames when the first fire crews arrived between 1:15 p.m. and 1:30 p.m., and with the nearest fire hydrants more than three miles away, firefighters struggled to find water to douse the flames.

An excavator was required to pull the building apart to get the fire out entirely, Wallace said Monday, leaving “nothing but a cellar hole.”

According to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland, Pulsifer recently moved to the building after living in New York.

The two-unit, 4,641-square-foot building, built in 1900, was appraised at $288,200, according to town assessing records.
