Wheaton eliminates St. Joseph’s in NCAA baseball tourney

HARWICH, Mass. — The No. 3 Wheaton College Lyons scored two runs in the top of the ninth to eliminate the No. 6 St. Joseph’s College Monks 5-3 in the NCAA Division III New England baseball tourney Saturday.

The game resumed Saturday morning after being suspended Friday night after two fog delays and Wheaton leading 2-0 in the top of the seventh.

Wheaton added another run in the seventh, but the Monks rallied to tie it with three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Alex Markakis scored the first run on a groundout to shortstop by Alex Lorenc. Markakis had led off with a single and advanced on a double by Dan Achorn.

Sam Butts followed with an RBI single and eventually scored on an infield throwing on Nate Martin’s sacrifice bunt.

Wheaton came back to win the game with two runs in the ninth on RBI singles by Hal Landers and Eric Jensen.

Butts finished with three hits for St. Joe’s which finished its season at 32-15. Wheaton is 32-11.
