AUGUSTA, Maine — Residents in three southern Maine communities are going to the polls for a special legislative election to fill a seat vacated by Sen. Larry Bliss of South Portland.
Democrat Cynthia Dill of Cape Elizabeth and Republican Louis Maietta Jr. of South Portland are facing off Tuesday in Senate District 7. The district covers Cape Elizabeth, South Portland and Scarborough.
The election heated up in recent days, with Democrats attacking Maietta’s personal finances and Republicans attacking Dill as part of the liberal establishment responsible for high taxes and job losses.
Bliss resigned to take an out-of-state job. He says he was unemployed and unable to find work in Maine, so he’s taking a job as an administrator at California State University-East Bay.
