College commencement exercises planned across the state this weekend


University of Maine commencement exercises will be conducted Saturday, May 7, at Harold Alfond Sports Arena in Orono. Because of the number of participants, a morning ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. for degree candidates from the College of Business, Public Policy and Health, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Division of Livelong Learning. At 2:30 p.m. another ceremony will be held for students from the College of Education and Human Development, College of Engineering (including the School of Engineering Technology), and College of Natural Sciences, Forestry and Agriculture.

Each ceremony will last 1½ to two hours. U.S. Sen. Susan Collins will be the commencement speaker.

The University of Maine at Fort Kent will mark its 129th commencement beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at the UMFK Sports Center. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Douglas Brinkley, an American author, a professor of history at Rice University and a fellow at the James Baker Institute for Public Policy. He is the history commentator for CBS News as well as a contributing editor to Vanity Fair magazine.

Unity College commencement exercises are scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, May 7, in the gymnasium on the college campus, 90 Quaker Hill Road in Unity. Author and sustainable agriculture activist Gary Nabhan will be the commencement speaker.
