Washington Hancock Community Agency facilities to go smoke free

ELLSWORTH, Maine — Washington Hancock Community Agency is putting into effect on May 2 a smoke-free campus policy at all of its locations in the two counties, including Ellsworth, Blue Hill, Machias and Milbridge.

“We have instituted this policy to encourage employees who smoke to either reduce their smoking or quit smoking,” Tim King, executive director of WHCA, said in a press release announcing the action. “We want to emphasize that we encourage our employees to have a healthy lifestyle.”

Before the decision was made, employees were surveyed to see if they would support a smoke-free campus policy and the majority said they would. Employees who smoke were offered options and resources to assist in smoking cessation. WHCA also offered to pay for supplies or other methods employees might choose to help them quit.

“I think it’s good to promote a healthy work environment,” Carla Britton Ramsey, the Wellness chairperson for WHCA, said. “I hope it does result in people quitting smoking.”
