MEREDITH, N.H. – Margaret “Peg” Josephine Bennett, 81, wife of Robert J. Bennett, passed away April 8, 2011, in Meredith, N.H., after a brief illness. She was born Margaret Josephine Murphy, June 9, 1929, in New York City, daughter of Michael Murphy and Alice Margaret Halloran, both natives of Ireland.
Her Irish heritage was an important part of her personality. A brief conversation with Margaret might have led you to conclude that she was a newly arrived immigrant eager to take up life in the New World. She grew up in the Savin Hill neighborhood of Dorchester, Mass. In response to family needs, Margaret left school at 16 years of age and worked as a telephone operator for Bell Telephone Co. On Jan. 5, 1952, she married Robert J. Bennett in Boston. They moved to Bangor in 1954 to establish a wholesale florist business and raise their three children. After raising their family, and surviving a major cancer at 40 years of age, Margaret earned her high school diploma at Bangor High School. The Bennetts lived in the Bangor area until 1990, when they became residents of Vero Beach, Fla. In retirement they traveled to all continents, visited relatives in Ireland and spent the summers on Union River Bay, Ellsworth.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her sister, Mary Francis Sobocinski of Easley, S.C.; her daughter, Christine Morse of Meredith, N.H.; son-in-law, Edward Morse; daughter, Mary Ann Ferris of Stow, Mass.; and her son, Robert D. Bennett of Bangor. She is also survived by her four grandchildren, Andrew Bennett, Alex Bennett, U.S. Marine Corps, Charles Ferris, U.S. Marine Corps, and Chrissie Ferris; and a great-grandson, Henry Bennett. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends who received her words of encouragement and inspiration.
At her request, there will be no services. Interment will be in the family plot at Belmont Town Cemetery, Belmont, Mass. Donations in memory of Margaret Bennett may be made to Maine Community Foundation, 245 Main St., Ellsworth, ME 04605-1613, www.mainecf.org.
