Husson baseball sweeps Thomas

BANGOR — Dan Beatham pitched a shutout, yielding four hits and two walks while striking out two, in lifting Husson University over Thomas College of Waterville 7-0 in the first game of Friday’s college baseball doubleheader at Winkin Complex.

Husson won the second game 5-4.

In the first game, Jake Arthers and Ethan Guerette each had a double, single and an RBI for the Eagles. Kevin Rennick singled twice, Cody McInnis scored two runs and Kyle Vanidestine doubled with an RBI.

Rob Nutter doubled and singled to lead Thomas.

In the second game, Shawn Smith had a double, two singles and knocked in two runs to pace the Eagles. Nick Ververis added a triple and two singles, McInnis doubled with two RBIs and Guerette scored two runs.

Daniel Ierardi had two singles, a run and an RBI for Thomas. Jeff Richardson singled twice, and Cody Vigue doubled with an RBI.

At Nashua, N.H., Daniel Webster College used a nine-run sixth inning to blow open the game and cruise past the University of Maine at Presque Isle.

Tyler Calkin singled four times and Zach Cantor tripled with three RBIs for Daniel Webster.

Stephen Thorne singled and knocked in a run for the Owls. Carlos Villoria, Corey Harding and James Cirrell each had a single and scored a run.

At Cambridge, Mass., right-hander Dylan Worster pitching a shutout with four hits, a walk and six strikeouts to lead the University of Maine at Presque Isle past winless Lesley University.

Matt Nadeau hit two doubles and a scored a run for the Owls while Jake Fillebrown doubled, singled and drove in a run.

At Lewiston, Brendan Garner hit a double and two singles and scored three runs and Christian Martin picked up his third win as Bowdoin of Brunswick beat Bates.

Martin pitched eight innings, allowing two earned runs and struck out six for the Polar Bears. Mat Ruane hit two singles, Dan Findley doubled with two RBIs and Joe Comizio hit a single and drove in two runs.

Noah Lynd hit a solo home run to pace Bates. Mike Ciummei doubled and singled, and Ryan Sonberg singled twice.

At Waterville, Colby jumped out a 3-0 lead after the first inning and never looked back in beating Saint Joseph’s of Standish.

Richard Newton doubled and scored after a double steal for Colby’s first run. Brendan Gallagher and Robb Arndt hit RBI doubles to bring home the other two runs in the first inning. Arndt totaled three RBIs with a double and two singles.

Alex Markakis hit an RBI single in the sixth for the Monks. In the seventh, Jimmy Rouse hit an RBI groundout and Nate Martin added a run-scoring single.

At Brunswick, Kara Nilan allowed no earned runs, five hits and walked none while striking out nine in leading Bowdoin to victory over Colby of Waterville at Pickard Field.

Toni DaCampo homered and doubled with four RBIs to lead the Polar Bears’ offense. Nilan also had a double, single and two runs scored. Caroline Dewar singled twice.

Brianne Wheeler doubled for Colby.

At Lewiston, Kristen Finn pitched six innings of shutout ball and Caroline Gattuso secured the save as Bates downed Trinity of Connecticut.

Finn surrendered four hits, one walk and struck out two in improving to 3-3. Gattuso was perfect in the seventh with a strikeout.

Courtney Talcott tripled with an RBI and a run scored for Bates. Lauren Dobish singled and drove in a run, and Leah Maciejewski had a single and a run.

Kerry McCarthy doubled for Trinity.
