HOULTON, Maine – A retail farm and ranch store that provides maintenance supplies to customers in 10 locations in Maine and 44 states nationwide soon will open in Houlton.
Tractor Supply Co., founded in 1938, is expected to open in the community by the end of the summer, Town Manager Doug Hazlett confirmed Monday. The store, which operates more than 1,001 stores across the U.S., will be built on North Street.
“A developer will build the store, and the company will lease it from the developer,” Hazlett said. “The town and the Southern Aroostook Development Corp. has been working on this for about a year. They are set to sign the lease.”
The new business will be located just north of PDQ Doors, which now operates at 331 North St. Groundbreaking is expected to take place later this month.
Tractor Supply Co. is the leading retail farm and ranch store brand in America, according to its website. Founded in 1938 as a mail order tractor parts business, TSC supplies daily farm and ranch maintenance supplies to a targeted customer base. It is based in Brentwood, Tenn., and caters to a niche market of farmers, horse owners, ranchers, part-time and hobby farmers, and suburban and rural homeowners, as well as contractors and tradespeople.
There is only one other TSC store in Aroostook County; it opened in Presque Isle a few years ago. The other Maine stores are located in Augusta, Bangor, Brunswick, Lewiston, Oxford, Sanford, Scarborough, Skowhegan and Wilton.
Hazlett said that the store will bring more than a dozen jobs to the community.
The establishment of TSC comes on the heels of an announcement that Olympia Sports will open in Houlton at the end of April. The sporting goods store will open in the former Movie Gallery store on North Street. It will employ 11 people.
