ORONO, Maine — The writer who has been referred to as the “poster girl for third-wave feminism” will lecture Thursday  at the University of Maine.

Jessica Valenti, author of “The Purity Myth,” will speak at 4 p.m. in Room 100 of the Donald P. Corbett Building.

Valenti will discuss her work on America’s obsession with virginity and how she believes it is hurting young women. Analyzing cultural stereotypes and media messages, Valenti will talk about the ways our society links a woman’s worth to her sexuality.

Her talk, the Anne Margaret Johnstone Memorial Lecture, is the keynote address for the University’s Women’s History Celebration. The theme for this year’s celebration is “The New F-Word: Feminism for the Future.”

Valenti received master’s degrees in Women’s and Gender Studies from Rutgers University, where she is a part-time lecturer.
