MACHIAS, Maine — A local man received serious head injuries Friday morning when he lost control of his pickup truck and crashed off Kennebec Road.

Joshua Holland, 33, was less than a mile from his home when he left the road about 7 a.m., crashed through a field and ended up in an alder swamp, more than 300 feet from the roadway, according to Machias police Chief Grady Dwelley.

Holland suffered facial and head injuries and was transported to Down East Community Hospital for treatment.

“We are currently investigating what caused this crash,” Dwelley said. “We are unsure if he had a medical incident prior to the crash or not.”

Dwelley said Holland’s dog also was in the truck when it crashed and, although it appeared unhurt, it was taken by Machias officials to an area veterinarian for examination. The truck was a total loss, Dwelley said.

Machias Officer Chrisy Verburgt, neighbors, and members of the Roque Bluffs and Machias fire departments assisted at the scene.
