Maine baseball team salvages Sunday game

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. — Stephen Perakslis of Maine pitched seven innings of two-run, two-hit ball to lead the Black Bears to an 8-3 victory over host Rider University Sunday afternoon to salvage the last game of a four-game series against the Broncs.
On Saturday, the Broncs pounded out 21 hits against UMaine pitching en route to 7-2 and 9-2 doubleheader victories.
Maine is now 6-15 overall while Rider moves to 10-8 after taking three of four from the Bears.
On Sunday, Maine finished strong by scoring three runs in both the eighth and the ninth to reward Perakslis (1-4) with his first win of the season. Perakslis left the game tied 2-2 despite notching six strikeouts against three walks and holding the Broncs to two hits. D.J. Voisine allowed one run and two hits in the final two innings.
With two outs in the eighth, Tyler Patzalek singled to left. Fran Whitten followed with an RBI double. Justin Leienheimer struck out, but reached first on a wild pitch and Michael Fransoso made Rider pay for the mistake with a two-run double.
In the ninth, Ian Leisenheimer hit an RBI single to left after Joey Martin of Portland walked and Taylor Lewis singled. After an RBI fielder’s choice, Patzalek delivered a sacrifice fly.

In the second game, Brandon Cotten went 3-for-4 in the first game with a double, two singles, an RBI and a stolen base to pace the offense. A.J. Albee doubled twice and drove in two runs. Nate Eppley (2-2) notched the win with six innings of two-run, two-hit ball.
