Car strikes teen snowmobiler crossing Dexter road

By Diana Bowley, BDN Staff

DEXTER, Maine — A 16-year-old snowmobiler was injured late Tuesday afternoon when he crossed the Airport Road in Dexter in front of a vehicle headed toward Exeter.

The Corinna teenager was headed to his hometown when the accident occurred at 5 p.m., according to Sgt. Kevin Wintle of the Dexter Police Department. Wintle said the teenager’s vision was obscured by the sun so he didn’t see the oncoming truck driven by Steven McKusick,  59, of Corinna. McKusick was unable to avoid a collision, he said.

The teenager, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered a head injury and was taken by private vehicle to Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft for treatment, Wintle said.

The 1979 Kawasaki snowmobile had about $1,500 in damage. McKusick’s 2009 Toyota pickup had about $500 in damage.

Dexter police Officer Dana Gatcomb investigated the accident.
