AUGUSTA, Maine — Gov. Paul LePage will mark the onset of Maine’s maple syrup season as he participates in the annual maple tree tapping at the Blaine House.

Wednesday’s event draws attention to what the governor calls a multimillion-dollar industry in Maine. He says licensed producers in Maine turned out 310,000 gallons of syrup last year.

The event also highlights Maine Maple Sunday, which will be held March 27. As part of this year’s celebration of maple syrup production, more than 70 sugarhouses will be open to the public around the state.

State agriculture, conservation and maple officials will join the governor at Wednesday’s event.
