Stetson’s Schluter shuts down UMaine


DeLAND, Fla. — Stetson’s Kurt Schluter shut out UMaine for seven innings en route to a 6-2 college baseball victory Tuesday night.

Schluter allowed only two hits, struck out seven and walked one to help Stetson improve to 6-1 while the Black Bears slipped to 1-6.

Maine starting pitcher A.J. Bazdanes was victimized by two errors when the Hatters scored two unearned runs to take a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Bazdanes pitched 4 2/3 innings, gave up three earned runs and five hits while striking out five and walking three.

Stetson added two runs in the fourth inning on a sacrifice bunt by Robert Crews and an RBI single by Jeff Simpson. Sean Emory scored the first run after singling and stealing second. He advanced to third on a Mitchell Brennan single and scored on Crews’ bunt. Brennan then scored the inning’s second run on Simpson’s single to right-center.

Maine, which managed only three hits, scored its two runs in the ninth on an Alex Calbick RBI grounder and an RBI single by Tyler Patzalek.

D.J. Voisine turned in a solid relief effort for Maine as he pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowing one hit and striking out one.

The Black Bears continue their spring trip Wednesday with a 4 p.m. game at Central Florida in Orlando.
