WISCASSET, Maine — Luke Bryant, who was charged with manslaughter in connection with the shooting death of his friend Tyler Seaney, was released this week from Two Bridges Regional Jail after paying bail of $25,000 cash or $100,000 surety.

Seaney, 19, was killed the night of Feb. 19 in Bryant’s apartment in the Waldo County town of Knox. According to a police affidavit, Bryant, who is also 19, reportedly had meant to scare Seaney when he pointed a Mossberg Model A shotgun at him and pulled the trigger. But the gun was loaded and the blast of pellets struck Seaney in the neck.

When police arrived at Bryant’s apartment after he called 911, they found him administering CPR on his friend, but members of the Unity Volunteer Ambulance Corps pronounced Seaney dead at the scene.

The Class A felony manslaughter charge carries a sentence of as much as 30 years in prison and a $50,000 fine. The state alleges that Bryant recklessly caused Seaney’s death.

Bryant was arrested last Wednesday and originally held on $250,000 cash bail.

On Friday, bail was set lower during Bryant’s first court appearance. He appeared by three-way videoconference from Two Bridges Regional Jail. Judge John Kennedy presided from West Bath District Court and Maine Assistant Attorney General Leane Zainea and Bryant’s retained defense attorney Christopher MacLean of Camden appeared at Belfast District Court.

Bail conditions set by Kennedy include that he not use or possess firearms or dangerous weapons and also that he submit to random searches for firearms and dangerous weapons.

A Two Bridges official said Bryant was released from jail on Monday, Feb. 28.

Bryant’s next court appearance for a pretrial status conference was scheduled for May 26 in Belfast District Court.
