Presque Isle girls roll past Gardiner

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

BANGOR — Any chance the Gardiner girls basketball team had of upsetting top-ranked Presque Isle was vaporized before some fans even settled into their seats Saturday.

Coach Jeff Hudson’s Wildcats built a 20-3 lead after one quarter and never looked back en route to a 48-27 Eastern Maine Class B quarterfinal victory over the Tigers at the Bangor Auditorium.

The 18-1 Wildcats will meet defending regional champion Nokomis in the semifinals on Wednesday while No. 8 Gardiner concludes its season 12-7.

Presque Isle fed off its full-court pressure to force 25 Tiger turnovers, with Chandler Guerrette leading the charge with four steals while Chelsea Nickerson and Kayla Richards had three apiece.

Meredith Stewart powered the offense with 12 points while Karlee Bernier had 11, Guerrette nine and Richards eight.

Bernier paced PI’s first-quarter run with eight points, including two 3-pointers, while the ‘Cats lead grew to 33-6 at halftime and as large as 31 points in the second half.

Jenna Moore’s eight points led the Tigers.
