AUGUSTA, Maine — A campaign worker for former Maine Democratic gubernatorial candidate John Richardson is not contesting charges that she falsified statements in the collection of $5 contributions to help him qualify for public campaign funding.

Fifty-one-year-old Denise Altvater of Perry entered an Alford plea Thursday to three counts of unsworn falsification, acknowledging that a jury could find her guilty based on the state’s evidence but falls short of admitting wrongdoing.

The Kennebec Journal reports Altvater was placed on deferred disposition, meaning she will be able to withdraw her plea and have the charges dismissed by completing 60 hours of community service.

Altvater will do workshops with teenage members of the Passamaquoddy Tribe in Perry focusing on substance abuse, AIDS prevention and other topics.

Three other former campaign workers face similar charges.
