AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine Gov. Paul LePage says he believes the explanation by Rep. Emily Cain, D-Orono, that she paid for her energy audit under a program that the Maine Republican Party has accused of being a “slush fund for Democrats.”
Charlie Webster, chair of the Maine Republican Party, accused the now-defunct Maine Green Energy Alliance of favoritism toward House Democrats, such as minority leader Emily Cain.
Cain responded by saying she paid for the energy audit of her house and calling Webster’s claims a “pathetic political ploy.”
Speaking to the Sun Journal of Lewiston, LePage said: “I’m going to be very candid. I don’t speak on [the Maine GOP’s] behalf and they don’t speak on mine.”
“I did speak to Emily Cain,” LePage said. “She tells me she did pay for an energy audit. I buy it. I believe her. I have no reason not to. And I support what she said.”
