River City Rumble set Wednesday night in Hermon

BDN staff reports

The fifth annual River City Rumble, featuring the four high school wrestling teams from Greater Bangor, will be held beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Hermon High School.

Teams from Hermon, Brewer, John Bapst of Bangor and Old Town will gather for a series of dual meets in advance of conference championship meets scheduled for Saturday.

Brewer is the two-time defending meet champion, with its victory last year marking the first time a school had won the Rumble more than once. John Bapst was the 2008 champion, while Hermon won the inaugural event in 2007.

The meet also has served as senior night for all of the wrestlers who will be competing in the final regular-season meet of their careers.

After the Rumble, Hermon, Old Town and John Bapst will move on to the Penobscot Valley Conference championships at Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln on Saturday, while Brewer next will compete in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference championships at Mount Ararat School in Topsham on Saturday. The KVACs originally were slated to be held at Cony High School in Augusta but recently were shifted to Mount Ararat due to a scheduling conflict at Cony.
