AUGUSTA, Maine — Gov. Paul LePage’s directive telling acting department heads to check with his staff before releasing certain information to the media is causing a minor stir in the Maine State House.
The memo to acting commissioners, dated Monday, says communications with media pertaining to policy areas should be coordinated through LePage’s communications office.
Asked about it Wednesday, the Republican governor played it down as a routine step. LePage said that as a new governor, he simply wants to know what his department heads are up to.
House Democratic Leader Emily Cain of Orono said she understands the need during a transition period for a “careful information flow,” but she doesn’t want to see delays in giving information to legislators for their constituents.
