MONROE, Maine — Police arrested a Jackson man this week and charged him with stealing $2,298 worth of chain saws from a Monroe property in May as well as a pickup truck from Troy in December.
Smith L. Bickford, 48, was arrested Tuesday by Detective Merl Reed of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office, who has been investigating the thefts.
The theft of three Jonsered chain saws from a property on Jackson Road in Monroe was reported to the sheriff’s office May 27. Each tool was valued at $766, according to a press release from the Sheriff’s Office.
Bickford also has been charged with theft by unauthorized taking or transfer in connection with the theft of a 1987 Ford pickup truck from a property on Bog Road in Troy, which was reported on Dec. 8.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the truck had been sitting at the property for a while. Thieves apparently backed a dual-wheel vehicle up to it, loaded it on to another vehicle and then drove away with it.
This type of load-up and drive-away theft has occurred in other areas including Dixmont and Newburgh, according to the press release, which stated that detectives from Waldo County have been working with police in Penobscot County.
