AUGUSTA, Maine — A Maine lawmaker is trying to clear the way to let Peaks Island secede from Portland and form its own town.
Republican Windol Weaver of York says Peaks Island is contributing more money to Portland than residents are getting from the city.
Weaver submitted a bill in the Legislature that would authorize Peaks Island’s secession. Four years ago a similar bill was narrowly defeated.
Peaks Island is the most populated island in Casco Bay. It’s about three miles from the mainland and has a year-round population of fewer than 1,000 people.
The Portland Press Herald says some complain that Peaks Island property owners pay about $6 million in property taxes to the city, which spends only half that amount on services for the island.
