Search for missing Rockwood man to resume in spring

ROCKWOOD, Maine — State game wardens plan to resume their search in late spring for a Rockwood man who they believe drowned while kayaking in mid-November on Moosehead Lake.

James Russell, 51, was last seen on Sunday, Nov. 14, on Sand Bar Way in Rockwood.

Wardens believe Russell drowned while kayaking across the lake to Kineo. His kayak, a paddle and his backpack were found in the water about two miles from Kineo.

After Russell was reported missing, an aggressive search was conducted by wardens, Unity College Search and Rescue members, Maine Search and Rescue dog teams, Maine Forest Service rangers, members of Russell’s family and his friends. The search was suspended when no further clues as to his whereabouts were found.

Lt. Kevin Adam of the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife said Tuesday that his department would begin its search again after the spring thaw.

“Hopefully, we’ll come up with some clues as to where he is,” Adam said.
