Coast Guard: Sinking ship’s crew rescued off Owls Head

The Associated Press

OWLS HEAD, Maine — The Coast Guard says rescue crews and another vessel aided three crew members of a sinking commercial fishing boat east of Owls Head State Park on Friday.

The Coast Guard says it received a report at 8:40 p.m. that the fishing boat Miss Jill was sinking and three crew members were abandoning their ship on a life raft.

Officials say the fishing boat Rising Sun was in the immediate area and picked up the three crew members from the raft.

“It’s fortunate the Rising Sun crew was close by to assist the mariners,” said Chris Berry, a Coast Guard Sector Northern New England operational unit controller. “This shows the great camaraderie of a tight-knit maritime community.”
