Portland’s final appointed mayor to take oath

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — Portland city councilor and current Mayor Nicholas Mavodones Jr. will be inaugurated this week as mayor until December 2011.

Mavodones will be sworn in at noon Monday at city hall. He’s been an at-large city councilor since 1997 and served three terms as mayor previously. Mavodones works as director of operations for the Casco Bay Lines ferry company.

Mavodones was elected mayor by city council. But voters in Maine’s largest city a month ago changed that system and authorized a return to having a popularly elected mayor. A mayor will be popularly elected in Portland in November 2011.

On Monday, at-large city councilors John Anton and Jill Duson as well as District 3 Councilor Ed Suslovic will also be sworn in.
