College to host indoor rock climbing contest Dec. 11

By Sharon Kiley Mack, BDN Staff

CALAIS, Maine — Washington County Community College is hosting the first annual RockFest indoor rock climbing competition 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, at the climbing wall in St. Croix Hall.

The event is being organized by students in the adventure recreation and tourism program and is open to all levels of climbers. The scoring format for this event is similar to that of climbing competitions in the American Bouldering Series, in which climbers receive points for each route or problem they successfully climb.

Prizes will be offered in three different categories: beginner, intermediate and advanced for both women and men.

The entry fee for participants is $10. A donation at the door is asked for spectators. T-shirts will be provided to the first 35 registered climbers and will be for sale at the event. All proceeds raised through this event will be donated to WCCC’s Outdoor Adventure Center and Teens to Trails.

Students are currently soliciting donations to help support the costs of this event.

Donations have been received from the Townhouse Restaurant, the Calais Motor Inn, the Schooner Restaurant, Mad Rock Climbing Gear, Wilderness Medical Associates, and Alpenglow Adventure Sports in Orono.

T3 is a nonprofit organization that facilitates the growth of high school outing clubs across Maine by providing grant money to support traveling expenses, equipment costs and camping fees associated with outdoor recreation. More information on Teens to Trails is available here.
