BANGOR — Bicyclists will be zooming around the downtown area for Bangor’s first alleycat bike race on Sunday Dec. 5, starting at 3 p.m. on Central Street.

In a race titled “So You Think You Know Bangor?” competitors will race between 5 and 10 checkpoints, ending at Paddy Murphy’s Pub at 26 Main St.

Alleycat races are popular in big cities. Sometimes the races are themed, and at each checkpoint, competitors must perform a feat in order to continue pedaling. For the Bangor race, competitors will only have to collect signatures from people manning each checkpoint.

“A lot of people haven’t raced in an alleycat, and this is just to get their feet wet,” said race organizer Kierie Picci, who estimates the race’s total distance at 4-5 miles.

Picci used to live in New York City, where alleycat races are common. She saw bicyclists climbing statues, donning wigs and dancing at checkpoints throughout The Big Apple.

She intends to organize Ban-gor alleycat races several times a year. In future races, she might introduce themes and checkpoint tasks.

For Sunday’s race, seven sponsors have kicked in to provide prizes to award the top three competitors, top woman and last place. The awards will be given at 6 p.m. at the Paddy Murphy’s after party.
