Murder trial begins for Portland man

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — A murder trial has begun for a Portland man who is accused of stabbing his ex-girlfriend to death.

Jurors were seated Tuesday and opening statements followed in the trial of 52-year-old William Hanaman.

He is accused of killing 47-year-old Marion Shea on Nov. 11, 2009, in his apartment before overdosing on prescription drugs in an attempt to take his own life.

Hanaman had been charged with domestic violence assault against Shea a few weeks before the killing and had been ordered to stay away from her.

Hanaman’s lawyer says the stabbing was self-defense and that Hanaman intends to testify.
