Trial set for Portland man charged with killing ex-girlfriend

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — Jury selection is continuing in the trial of a Portland man charged with stabbing his ex-girlfriend to death in his apartment.

Opening statements in the trial of William Hanaman are expected Tuesday, assuming a jury is seated in Cumberland County Superior Court in Portland.

Police say they used bolt cutters to get into Hanaman’s apartment where officers found the body of 47-year-old Marion Shea, a mother of five, on Nov. 11, 2009. Hanaman was found next to her, barely conscious. He overdosed on prescription drugs but survived.

Hanaman’s lawyer Robert Levin tells the Portland Press Herald that Hanaman stabbed Shea in self defense. Jury selection began Monday morning.
