ELLSWORTH, Maine — Two Hancock County residents and a Vermont man are facing drug trafficking charges after police executed a search warrant at a local woman’s apartment last Friday, according to a Maine Drug Enforcement Agency official.

On the afternoon of Nov. 19, police stopped a vehicle after a man in the vehicle allegedly had just participated in an illegal drug transaction, MDEA Division Commander Darrell Crandall wrote Monday in a prepared statement. MDEA agents had been monitoring activity at an apartment on North Street and had witnessed suspicious activity there, Crandall indicated.

Police found six bags of heroin inside the vehicle and arrested Mark McFarland, 26, of Bar Harbor on a charge of trafficking in illegal drugs, Crandall said.

MDEA agents and local police then executed a search warrant at the North Street apartment of Nina Wallace, 26, where they found an additional 70 bags of heroin, according to Crandall. Wallace and Merton Dube, 32, of St. Johnsbury, Vt., who was at the apartment, both were arrested on charges of trafficking in illegal drugs.

The estimated value of all the heroin seized is approximately $2,300, Crandall indicated.

According to Crandall, police suspect Dube of bringing larger quantities of the drug to Wallace, who is suspected of selling smaller retail amounts to users in Hancock County.

All three are facing felony Class B crimes, which are punishable by up to 10 years in jail and a fine of up to $20,000. They are scheduled to make initial appearances in Hancock County Superior Court on March 24, 2011.
