SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Western New England College’s football team capped its most successful season with a decisive 66-41 victory over Maine Maritime Academy in the ECAC North Central Bowl Championship game.
Junior quarterback Bryce Brown set a school record with 467 total yards — 307 rushing — and scored five touchdowns to lead the 9-2 Golden Bears while also winning the most outstanding player award in the process.
Brown completed 13 of 15 passes for 160 yards and three TD passes. The Bears jumped out to a 28-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back.
Mariners career rushing leader Jim Bower led the way with 137 yards and one TD on 23 carries as MMA kept pace with the Bears for three quarters, but couldn’t dig out of the big first quarter scoring deficit hole. The Mariners also couldn’t find a way to stop the Bears’ rushing attack as they finished with 526 yards on the ground to MMA’s 358. WNEC wound up with a whopping 686 total yards.
The Mariners, who finish 8-3, also got a 90-yard rushing effort out of Todd Murphy, who also scored three touchdowns, and 85 yards from Matt Rende.
